You hate to see your parents give up their freedom,
but you worry about their driving and want them to be
safe. A driving evaluation can help determine if
reactions, mobility and cognition are sufficient for
safe driving. Within reason, some deficiencies can be
compensated for by enhancing driving skills. It may also
be necessary to establish limitations (day time only,
short distances, familiar destinations or a driving
partner for example). Private lessons are also available
to help them maintain their dignity and make the most of
their driving skills.

Most licensed drivers would not pass the state road
exam if they had to take it today. What mistakes do
people make? What skills are examiners looking for? We
offer preparation for this test in a two hour block.
This includes a review of the necessary skills in a
simulation of a typical test. We recommend not waiting
until just before the test because it may take a while
to replace bad habits with new skills. Older drivers may
be required to retest once they reach a certain age. We
also highly recommend this review for people over age 18
who did not take driver education.

Many learning disabilities and many physical
disabilities do not preclude learning to drive. We focus
on what people can do. All of our students are unique
and we focus on accommodating learning styles,
communication skills and behavior issues (within
reason). We have worked with students and adults with
mild mental retardation or developmental delays,
attention deficit disorder, attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder, autism, anxiety disorders etc.
Our evaluation may conclude that a student is not
capable of driving safely, but more often, we develop a
plan of instruction so that they can achieve the goal of
obtaining a drivers license.
